Description
In a German prison camp near the end of the Third Reich’s occupation of France, a small group of condemned men faces a grim arithmetic: three will be executed, and the rest will wait in dread for the outcome. As one prisoner—educated, well-off, and trained to believe in order—struggles to connect with the others, he is forced to confront what his privilege can’t protect and what courage costs when survival becomes a moral gamble. Blending suspense with Greene’s signature moral clarity, the novel explores themes of sacrifice, solidarity, and the uneasy distance between “respectable” life and raw human desperation. With its tightly focused setting and psychologically sharp character work, it asks how far a person will go to save a life—and what that choice demands in return.
