Description
Javier Cercas embarks on a profound personal and historical investigation into the Spanish Civil War, centered on the enigmatic figure of his great-uncle, Manuel Mena. Once lauded as a heroic fallen soldier fighting for Franco, Mena's legacy becomes a complex and uncomfortable inheritance for Cercas. Through a masterful blend of memoir, historical research, and literary reflection, Cercas seeks to understand the man behind the myth, exploring themes of idealism, betrayal, and the enduring power of the past. This deeply resonant work offers a poignant examination of how individual lives are shaped by the grand, often brutal, currents of history, and the struggle to reconcile personal memory with national narratives.
