In the aftermath of World War II, a young French woman named Mathilde embarks on a new life in Morocco with her husband, only to find herself adrift in an unfamiliar world. As she navigates the challenges of rural life, isolation, and the suspicion of those around her, Mathilde grapples with her own desires and the constraints of her new reality. Against the backdrop of Morocco's escalating fight for independence, she and her husband become entangled in the growing political turmoil, forcing them to confront their loyalties and the true meaning of belonging. This sweeping novel explores themes of identity, cultural displacement, and the search for freedom amidst a landscape on the brink of profound change.
