Description

A mother’s life is shattered by loss: her husband dies, and her sons—one by one—are taken from her, leaving grief and guilt to echo through every day. Seeking distance from Japan’s memories, she travels to Mexico and begins again in a remote village, where survival requires both endurance and a willingness to confront what she has tried to outrun. As her new surroundings slowly reshape her sense of self, the novel explores the fragile boundary between mourning and healing, and the ways love can persist even when language fails. Written in Kenzaburō Ōe’s distinctive, emotionally incisive style, this is a haunting meditation on suffering, responsibility, and the possibility—however uncertain—of renewal.
