Description
In 1986, twenty-year-old Syvert Løyning returns to southern Norway and is unsettled by a dream that forces him to question the story he’s been living—especially the truth about his father and the secrets that may reach back to the Soviet Union. Years later in present-day Russia, Alevtina Kotov, a biologist whose curiosity has dimmed, begins to confront the gaps in her own past when her life intersects with Syvert’s. As their paths converge in Moscow, the novel braids personal investigation with political and cultural history, using shifting timelines to explore how identity is shaped by memory, inheritance, and what we choose not to know. With Knausgaard’s signature blend of intimate realism and apocalyptic wonder, this expansive, emotionally resonant story turns on themes of kinship, nature, and the mysteries that persist beyond our worldview.
