Description
A History of My Brief Body is a bold, intimate collection of essays and vignettes that moves through grief, colonial violence, joy, love, and queerness with uncompromising honesty. Drawing from the author’s own life, it traces what it means to live as an Indigenous person in Canada and as a gay man—where tenderness and survival are braided together, and where the body becomes both witness and battleground. With lyrical intensity and sharp political clarity, the book confronts the legacies of erasure while insisting on the possibility of connection, care, and transformation. Belcourt’s fiercely intelligent, essay-driven style turns personal memory into a wider reckoning, inviting readers to look directly at what must change—and what can still be reclaimed.

while extremely vulnerable and candid, this book was also so densely written that it became impenetrable. it's written to be beautiful, but crosses the line into obtuse. you'd need a thesaurus and a dictionary to truly consume this memoir—which functions more like a literary gambit of verbiage and evidence of how well read belcourt is. unfortunately the way it's written just surpassed the level at which i would have found it enjoyable.
