Despite the clear debt to the Canterbury Tales, Simmons gives his characters no distinct voicing. The soldier, the poet, and the consul all narrate in the same register. Chaucer's pilgrims are unmistakable from a single line. Simmons's are distinguished only by what happened to them, never by how they speak. Despite that, the imagery is good. The cruciforms, time tombs, shrike, and hyperion itself conjure enough mystery to compel a reader.
