Description
This powerful novella plunges readers into the complex social dynamics of a rural South Korean classroom, where a new student from Seoul expects sophistication but finds a brutal hierarchy. The narrative centers on Han Pyongt'ae's struggle against the charismatic and tyrannical class bully, Om Sokdae, whose power is maintained through manipulation and the complicity of classmates and even teachers. As Pyongt'ae grapples with submission and the loss of his spirit, the story unfolds as a sharp political allegory, exploring themes of power, conformity, and the corrupting nature of absolute control. Yi Munyol masterfully crafts a compelling tale that resonates with the timeless struggles for individuality and justice within oppressive systems.
