Description
From the Booker Prize-winning author of Atonement comes a darkly comic novel about ambition, self-deception, and the gap between scientific brilliance and personal failure. Dr. Michael Beard, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist whose greatest achievements lie in his past, coasts on his reputation while leading a government initiative on global warming—all while his fifth marriage crumbles under the weight of his chronic infidelity. When a freak accident forces his professional and personal worlds to collide, Michael sees an unexpected chance to reinvent himself, salvage his career, and perhaps even address humanity's environmental crisis. Yet as his schemes unfold, the novel poses a provocative question: can a man incapable of managing his own life truly be trusted to solve the world's problems? McEwan's sharp wit and psychological insight create a compelling portrait of a flawed genius confronting the consequences of his choices.
