Description

A shipwreck strands a small party of sightseers on a remote island in the Irish Sea, where the landscape seems to hold its own secrets and the past refuses to stay buried. As the group presses toward a mysterious house, lives begin to overlap—memory, guilt, and longing taking on the weight of something almost supernatural. At the center of the story is Freddie, whose release from confinement sets him on a searching journey back through familiar places, including a stop at his former home now claimed by his wife. With John Banville’s signature lyrical precision and psychologically charged atmosphere, the novel explores how we haunt ourselves, how love curdles into regret, and how “ghosts” can be both what lingers and what returns.
