Description

A bitter, lucid psychiatrist drives from the sunlit Algarve back to a Lisbon mental institution, and in the long stretch of one day his journey becomes a descent into memory, guilt, and moral reckoning. As he rides through a bleak, half-real landscape, he holds an imaginary conversation with his daughter and confronts the lingering damage of a colonial war, a failed marriage, and a society that seems to trade compassion for convenience. Blending surreal vision with sharp, unsparing critique, the novel interrogates the violence embedded in institutions—especially psychiatry—questioning whether “progress” can ever be more than another form of control. With António Lobo Antunes’s signature intensity and lyrical, fragmented storytelling, this is a haunting meditation on suffering, responsibility, and the knowledge we carry when the world refuses to make sense.
