just a very poorly written poirot novel. between the short stories poorly glued together, clearly written as one offs, and then poirot acting so severely out of established character, there was little left to like. having hastings back was the real highlight since the james bond supervillain levels of smoke bombs, poison darts, and mountain lairs were unbearable to read. also in the edition i read (which may or may not be this one) the last 40+ pages were oddly enough a teaser from death on the nile which is book #18 in the series.
