Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956) was a German playwright, poet and theatre practitioner whose work came out of the Weimar years. He wrote The Threepenny Opera in Berlin and developed the idea of epic theatre, and after fleeing the Nazis in 1933 he spent time in Southern California before settling in East Berlin. His plays include The Caucasian Chalk Circle, in which a servant girl rescues an abandoned infant during war and a judge rules on the child's fate, and The Good Woman of Setzuan.
