The Black West: Pathfinders, Cowpunchers, Homesteaders / Settlers, Oklahoma Land Rush, Buffalo Soldiers, California Gold Rush, Black Pioneer Women.
Description
This illuminating work recovers the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the exploration, settlement, and development of the American West. Through accounts of pathfinders, cowpunchers, homesteaders, Black pioneer women, Buffalo Soldiers, and participants in the Oklahoma Land Rush and California Gold Rush, it challenges the familiar mythology of a solely white frontier. Rich in historical detail and human stories, the book explores resilience, courage, community, and the struggle for opportunity and freedom. It offers a vivid, corrective portrait of the West and the Black men and women who helped shape it.
