Description
Blanche White, a single African American woman, takes temporary work as a cook and housekeeper for a right-wing Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate—only to find that her employers’ polished public image is shadowed by private harm. As a plot of intimidation and cover-ups tightens around her, Blanche’s sharp instincts and steady competence pull her toward the truth, exposing how power protects itself and how harm is distributed unevenly. At the heart of the story is environmental racism, including the threat of lead poisoning in poor urban communities, and the ways political agendas can normalize neglect. Barbara Neely blends suspense with social critique, using Blanche’s voice and lived experience to illuminate themes of dignity, agency, and community survival.
